Until A Basq Kitchen opened in Redondo Beach, Basque cuisine was relatively unknown in LA. The restaurant had a nice five-year run and it recently closed. The owners created a new California casual fish concept and re-opened as A Fish and Friends. Due to the pandemic, they feature open-air dining on the top deck of the International Boardwalk just above their restaurant.
The outdoor dining area is extremely inviting. Unlike the blockade walls on nearby streets, their perimeter was an attractive wood fence. Along the border facing the harbor, they have bar stool tables for two; otherwise, they have tables for four. Seating is spaced out so that it is socially distant.
The scene is even better than they had before because they now have an unobstructed view of the entire Redondo Beach Harbor. My wife and I watched people rent the pedal boats and paddleboards. A glass-bottom boat was preparing to leave the harbor. In short, we both felt like we were on vacation.
Fish and Chips is a natural item to serve harbor-side. The batter was crisp and the white fish was moist. The menu features two vegetarian dishes – a seasoned veggie kabob topped with roasted potatoes and a vegan ceviche.
They list a couple of popular carry-overs from the A Basq Kitchen menu – their famous paella which is available by request on Thursdays, and another popular item the ABK Burger. The burger is served with lettuce, tomato, and onion and is finished off with their famous bravas sauce.
Because of COVID-19, many cities have loosened their restrictions. Adult beverages are now served outdoors at many restaurants. A Fish and Friends had draft beer available as well as some varieties of wine.
A Fish and Friends is a great neighborhood hangout to chill with your friends and family. They offer an unparalleled view of King Harbor combined with tasty seafood and drink. The owners dramatically upgraded the view by moving up!
