I first became aware of Barsha when it opened as a boutique wine shop in Manhattan Beach. Barsha was not only a wine retailer but a destination for drinking wine by the glass and enjoying fine cheese, charcuterie, salads, and homemade spreads. Unlike many Manhattan Beach businesses located on Highland or Manhattan Ave, BARSA has free parking!
Husband and wife, Adnen and Lenora Marouani co-own Barsha. Their menu is a modern take on Adnen’s Tunisian roots. Couscous, called kosksi, is the national dish of Tunisia. The chili paste, harissa, is made from a blend of spices. Harissa gets its distinctive flavor from cumin and coriander.
The symbol of “Fatima’s Hand” is known all over the Middle East and North Africa. The name comes from Mohammed’s daughter Fatima. The five fingers represent Islam’s five pillars but are mainly a symbol used for protection and defense to ward off misfortune. Their starter, Fatima’s Hand (#13), is a mezze plate served on a beautiful Tunisian ceramic.
Shrimp and Pearl Couscous ($29) was a special that day. The crunchiness of the couscous reminded us of Spanish paella with couscous used instead of bomba rice. Seasoned grilled shrimp, mushrooms, cauliflower, zucchini, and red peppers were added. The Shrimp and Pearl Couscous was our favorite dish that evening.
If you are dining with someone risk-averse, try ordering the Zaatar Fries. Harissa ketchup and tabil aioli are dipping sauces included with the fries: Tabil Mac ($9) and Pappardelle with mushroom ragout, charred tomato, and basil gremolata.
Barsha’s menu has numerous offerings for the pescatarian, vegetarian, and even quite a few vegan dishes. Chef Lenora has a unique take on dishes with attention to detail, flavor combinations, and heavenly aromatics. The effective use of spices may satisfy your need for proteins.
Parking is free and directly in front of the restaurant. The servers are well trained and attend quickly, even refilling your water glass. Place Barsha on your “date night” destinations list. You won’t regret doing so.
