Until recently, Lomita residents had to travel to nearby Torrance to visit one of the South Bay’s craft breweries. Fortunately, the family of Bob, Shannon and Brendan Lake opened Burnin Daylight brewery on Narbonne Ave. near Lomita Blvd. Burnin Daylight opened its doors in January.
Brendan Lake is the brewer and the name Burnin Daylight is a tribute to his grandfather. His grandfather used to wake him up in the morning by saying, “Let’s go, we’re burning daylight.” Burnin Daylight happens to be Lomita’s first craft brewery.
Lake is not new to the industry. He had previous stints at South Bay breweries Dude’s, Phantom Carriage, El Segundo, and HopSaint. You might say that he hit the ground running knowing what works in the South Bay.
My wife and I visited Burnin Daylight on a Friday after work and we were surprised to see that the outside tables were already filled. Upon entering, most of the tables were occupied. It was interesting to see couples, friends, and families with young children. The place was buzzing with a lot of energy.
The brewery is set up like a fast-casual restaurant. As you enter, the complete food and beverage menu is posted on the wall. For a first time brewery, they have quite the variety of craft beer ranging from blondes to stouts. They do have 3 IPAs with a double IPA named “Small Town Feel”.
The Hazy IPA was smooth and not hoppy as many IPAs are. My wife, however, prefers blondes and she was happy with her selection. In addition to trying out their beer, we ordered food. The menu consists of typical bar food like hot dogs, jalapeno corn dogs, and wings. Not desiring that for our meal, I selected a Bratwurst Sandwich and my wife selected the Italian Sub Sandwich.
They use high-quality bratwurst, dijon mustard, and caramelized onions, certainly a good combination. Mortadella and other Italian deli meats were used to make my wife’s Italian sub. My wife commented that the bread on our sandwiches should have been switched as the bratwurst would have been better served on a French bread roll.
I love tater tots because they are very much like hash browns. They were served piping hot and with a choice of sauce (my wife selected ketchup). Potato chips are made in-house and are razor-thin. They are perfect for the person that is trying to watch their carbs.
I had a momentary flashback to my days in Westwood when I saw the Monte Cristo sandwich. Vegans will appreciate items like falafel, hummus, and jackfruit sliders.
Fortunately, there is plenty of free parking. There is a lot behind the building as well as one on 245th Street. Burnin Daylight is an excellent place to unwind at the end of the week.
