May is National Burger Month and just the thought of smelling a burger on the grill is enough to start my stomach growling. Fortunately, we have a full month dedicated to celebrating this humble American icon.
If you aren’t familiar with The Rockefeller’s 99 cent burger night on Tuesdays, you should be. Each week The Rockefeller makes its huge gourmet burger available for only 99 cents. All you have to do to take advantage of their offer is to purchase a beer or a glass of wine at their regular price.
The Rockefeller is designed around a Social House concept. They have sheltered outdoor seating and indoor seating with glass patio doors that open. The interior is designed to look like New York in the 1930’s with live sports playing on the big screens.
To keep it fresh for their regulars, they change the type of gourmet burger each month. This month’s featured burger is “Pickle The Fool” and May’s featured burger is “The Cabo”. I like the names because it demonstrates their devotion and personality.
While The Rockefeller features their 99 cent burgers on Tuesdays, they have plenty of other items to enjoy. Vegetarians can enjoy the Heirloom Tomato Salad with sliced avocados, sunflower seeds, asparagus and pea tendrils lightly bathed in a light citrus dressing. This is served with toasted crostini.
Another vegetarian item is their Rocke Salad: greens, shaved fennel, strawberries, gorgonzola, toasted almonds tossed in a sherry wine vin dressing.
It is amazing how many burgers servers deliver to the tables and I wondered how many burgers they go through each Tuesday. This month’s burger was the “Pickle The Fool” which is a double meat burger with jalapeno aioli, fried pickles, shredded lettuce, pepperjack cheese and a tomato slice. I added the avocado and bacon additions which placed this burger over the top in taste.
The Cabo Burger is the featured burger for the month of May (reminder, May is National Burger Month). This double meat burger has jalapeno jack cheese, shredded lettuce, ranchero sauce and lime crema. This burger looked equally tasty.
Their list of beers on tap is quite impressive. In fact, they even had a nitro beer the evening I was there. The wine list is not as extensive, but it was thoughtfully assembled with respect to maximizing the amount of varietals and geographic origins. For example, they have wines from Lodi, Sonoma, Columbia Valley, Italy, France and New Zealand.
One of the desserts available is their Craft Churros. Bite sized churros dusted with a cinnamon sugar mix are served with vanilla ice cream and vanilla and strawberry dipping sauces. Depending on
when you go to Rockefeller, the sauces could vary as they often have abuelita chocolate and caramel sauces.
The Rockefeller operates in both Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach.
Make sure you celebrate National Burger Month at The Rockefeller. You won’t find a better deal!
