Churriño Gourmet Desserts for Brazilian-style Churros

February 11, 2020 by Bryan

Street vendors used to be the sole place where you find Mexican churros. Nowadays, you are starting to see churros as an option on many LA restaurant dessert menus. A Latin Churro shop named Churriño recently opened on the Promenade in Long Beach.

Churrino

Mexican churros are typically foot-long fried pastries that are rolled in a cinnamon-sugar mixture. They are frequently served with a dipping sauce. Churriño prepares Brazilian-style churros. These are bite-sized and filled with sauces such as dulce de leche or chocolate.

Owner Nick Farkas was born in Brazil. He explained to me that his churros are just like the churros he ate growing up. The major difference is that instead of piping in the filling using a pastry tube, Farkas uses a commercial churro filling machine.

Farkas explained that he makes the churro dough from scratch daily and churros are prepared fresh to order. Once fried, they are placed in a cinnamon-sugar mixture. Fillings include strawberry jam, chocolate Nutella, and caramel leche.

Churrino - LOVE Addict
The LOVE Addict – 4 churros served with gelato

My wife and I shared the LOVE Addict. Churriño created special heart-shaped churros to commemorate Valentine’s Day. After each churro was filled, they were dipped in chocolate and topped with raspberry pearls and white chocolate sprinkles. We selected two flavors, birthday cake and chocolate as the frozen yogurt included in the LOVE Addict. The churros were fresh and tasty and the frozen yogurt was extremely creamy. The price of the LOVE Addict was quite reasonable – $7.45.

Beverages available include soft drinks, bottled water, a variety of coffee such as Americano, espresso, latte, macchiato, cappuccino and a matcha latte.

Churriño is located on the Promenade steps away from Long Beach’s City Place shopping center. A public parking lot is just around the corner on 3rd and Promenade. The first two hours are free. It’s also ideal after visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific or the Cinemark theater on Pine.

Churriño is open 7 days a week and opens each day at noon. If you want to purchase a LOVE Addict for your honey, make sure you get there by Valentine’s Day!
