After setting my post on Champion’s Curry, my foodie friend suggested that I try Curry Plus, a new Japanese restaurant in Torrance. I had seen some of their social media posts and it didn’t make an impression on me. Since I respect my friend’s opinion, I placed this on my bucket list and finally visited them last weekend.
The perimeter around Carson St and Western Ave in Torrance is ground zero to many top notch Japanese restaurants. Curry Plus is located in the Eastgate Plaza shopping mall, home to 85 Degrees Bakery, Wadatsumi and many other eateries. Plenty of free parking is available.
The restaurant is fairly small and due to COVID, only a few chairs were available so that you can be comfortable while you wait for your order. Unfortunately, Curry Plus does not have outdoor seating and all orders are packaged to-go.
Unlike many other restaurants that prepare curry dishes, Chef Oosaki-san makes the curry from scratch daily. Because they are packaging everything to-go, the Angus Beef Curry ($10.95) includes a nominal amount of curry sauce with steamed rice and vegetables. Included is a separate container of curry to pour over your rice. I replated mine and poured the sauce on the side. The curry is thick and complex due to the number of seasonings they include.
While Spinach Coconut Curry ($10.50) is a common dish from Southern India. I have not seen it on a Japanese restaurant menu. It was served much like their beef curry dish except that the base is green and made from fresh spinach and coconut. The coconut flavor was barely discernible and the heat level was slightly hotter than the beef curry.
Oosaki-san understands that not everyone enjoys curry. Their non curry options include two donburi rice bowls, Spicy Chicken Karaage ($9.50) and Sauce Chicken Katsu ($10.50). Their karaage is marinated and lightly fried unlike most karaage that is breaded and deep fried. It is placed on a bed of shredded red cabbage with a spicy sauce on top of steamed white rice.
If you miss the closing of Curry House, I highly encourage you to try Curry Plus. I feel the curry sauce is superior to Curry House and may be the best that I’ve ever tried. If you haven’t had curry made from scratch, you owe it to yourself to visit them and taste for yourself.
