I had heard of Tortilla Republic and never made time to check them out. On a spur of the moment decision, my wife and I decided to go there for weekend brunch; we were probably influenced by the fact that they were serving bottomless mimosas and sangrias.
Tortilla Republic serves modern Mexican cuisine and is located just east of Beverly Hills on Robertson Blvd. in West Hollywood. Plenty of parking is available; both on the street in front and in a parking lot behind the restaurant.
We sat on the semi-enclosed patio in front. The windows were so clean, I touched them to see if they were actually there and it still felt as if we were eating outdoors. Because we arrived shortly after opening, we had the patio largely to ourselves. Best of all, we found out that bottomless mimosas are only $10 per person if you arrive between 10 a.m. and noon.
The Mole Burrito appealed to me because I really like spinach. In addition to fresh spinach, the burrito is stuffed with egg whites and onions and topped with mole poblano sauce, salsa fresca and avocado slices. We both thought the mole poblano sauce was delicious.
My wife loves chilaquiles and she ordered it with ranchero sauce. Roasted poblano and onions, queso fresco, crema, pulled chicken tinga and black beans were added to the tortilla chips. The dish was topped with two poached eggs. The shredded chicken was nicely dispersed within the dish and the ranchero sauce was delicious.
We ordered the Cheddar Breakfast Potatoes as one of our sides. It is served in a mini cast iron skillet, fajitas-style with grilled peppers and onions.
I happen to like carnitas and wondered about their carnitas hash. This was the big surprise for both of us; huge chunks of carnitas were mixed with potatoes and caramelized onions. It was topped with two sunny side up eggs and honey adobo aioli.
Buñuelos are fried donuts and we were surprised to see tortilla strips with cinnamon sugar and honey. Due to the honey, these reminded us of New Mexican sopapillas in taste.
If you enjoy Mexican fare prepared with a modern twist, you should consider adding Tortilla Republic to your list of restaurants to visit.
