Gelson’s is a regional supermarket chain operating in the more affluent areas of Southern California. After a multi-year struggle with the City of Manhattan Beach, they finally opened on Nov. 14. I visited them a few times and have made some personal observations.
Gelson’s is best approached from the north on Sepulveda because from the south, drivers cannot turn left into their parking lot. Instead, drivers must turn left onto 8th Street and to make it more challenging, left turns are prohibited Monday through Friday from 3 – 7 p.m.
A Wolfgang Puck Express operates within the market. They offer individual pizzas, 18” pizzas or pizzas by the slice, fresh salads (e.g., BBQ Chicken Caesar, Chinois Chicken) as well as breakfast (breakfast wraps, egg sandwiches, and breakfast pizzas. For people short on time, they also have prepared Wolfgang Puck grab-and-go salads.
It was lunchtime and I made my way towards their Wine and Craft Beer Bar. Nearby, I encountered a young and talented trio performing live music. In addition, the Strand Brewing Co rep was on-hand providing complimentary beer samples and answering questions.
The tap has 12 draft beers, a mix of foreign and craft domestic brews, but I was impressed to see that they had over 35 selections of wine by the glass. Included are sparkling wines and sake. For food, I was delighted to see tapas, salads and light meals. Next to each item was the calorie count.
Knowing that I was going out that evening, I kept track of the calories. Justin Vineyards Cabernet is a favorite by many because it is well balanced with a nice nose. I paired the excellent cab wine with a short rib in a red wine sauce, polenta, and broccoli. The short rib was tender and the broccoli was fresh. I thought I did well at 540 calories. Gelson’s management has a sign on the counter asking for customers to refrain from adding gratuities. My bill was $26.60 including tax.
Viktor Benês Bakery & Coffee Bar operates in Gelson’s LA area locations. Consistent with Gelson’s desire to be known as a gourmet market, Viktor Benês features beautiful Instaworthy cakes and pastries. Prices for 8” cakes begin at $32.95. Their Tiramisu is a sight to behold!
Antipasti and olive lovers will enjoy the nice selection of items available by the pound. Next to this is a salad bar with a large selection of salad ingredients. Attractive pasta salads like the Waldorf and the Marco Polo are available at $11.99 / lb. Looking at the items, it is obvious that they are focusing on stocking it with quality fresh food.
Some of their sale items are heavily discounted. I was astounded that Peet’s ground coffee was only $5.99 a bag, including the organic varieties. Illy’s Espresso was $11.99. Fresh roasting chicken was $2.99 / lb (reg. $3.49) and Angus boneless NY Strip Steak was $12.99 / lb.
Since Florists are becoming more difficult to find these days, you’ll be happy to know that Gelson’s has an extensive floral offering. They have individual fresh flowers, pre-made arrangements and can also make custom floral designs to make an amazing gift.
Speaking of gifts, Gelson’s offers a free gift wrapping service. Last minute shoppers will find Gelson’s to be their go-to place for gifts.
There are many reasons to like and visit Gelson’s. The staff is warm, friendly and helpful. Meat, seafood, and produce are top quality and extremely fresh. During my most recent visit, I noticed a display of bread from Rockenwagner Bakery. Parking was expected to be challenging but has been a non-issue. For me, I think the prices are a bit high and they will become a destination when I need to give something that will “wow” someone.
