Adjacent to Chinatown is a new pop-up named Hotville Chicken and Chops. Only open on Saturdays, this restaurant is an offshoot of the popular Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack in Nashville. Hotville Chicken and Chops occupies the shuttered Michael J’s location on North Spring Street.
Like in Nashville, this is a hot fried chicken restaurant. Don’t expect to find any other types of food other than chicken and sides. Diners have a choice of a leg quarter or a breast. Sides include baked beans, kale cole slaw, potato salad and smoked mac & cheese.
This is not a fast food restaurant where chicken spends hours under heat lamps. Nashville Fried Chicken isn’t fast food. Each chicken is individually prepared to order. This ensures that you have the best experience possible.
Their fried chicken is available in a varying scale of heat. From mild to hot: West Coast Plain, Cali Mild, Music City Medium and Nashville Hot. I selected Music City Medium as I recently had “medium” hot fried chicken in Nashville.
Biting into the chicken, it was plump and moist. The heat quickly crept into my senses and I immediately felt sweat pouring through the pores in my head. Because the taste was so good, I pressed on and continued until I finished off the leg quarter.
The real surprise for me was the side of baked beans. This is made with two different beans and “fatless” hickory smoked bacon. The bacon is sliced into small cubes and simmered overnight with the baked beans. The result is truly a gastronomic delight.
I also ordered a breast with potato salad, smoked mac & cheese and of course another side of BBQ baked beans to go. The breast ended up to be boneless (a good thing). The mac & cheese was creamy and had a touch of oregano and smoky seasoning.
Hotville Chicken and Chops is presently subleasing the property from Michael J’s. While they are currently only open on Saturdays, the plan is to eventually open on Fridays and Sundays as well. They will continue this schedule into the summer; after that they will reevaluate their options.
If you are in the mood for some delicious hot fried chicken, drop by Hotville Chicken and Chops. They are open on Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
