West LA’s John O’Groats has been serving solid American comfort food for 36 years. They are open for breakfast and lunch and are best known for their signature items like corned beef hash, fried chicken, omelets and freshly baked buttermilk biscuits. John O’Groats lunch menu includes sandwiches, burgers and freshly made salads.
Owner Paul Tyler greets each person as they enter his restaurant. People watching is best done at the counter, but diners can also choose a traditional table topped with a blue and white checkerboard pattern. John O’Groats has expanded twice since they originally opened by extending into adjoining spaces.
The menu is quite extensive, but first time diners should take a look at the wall for their daily specials. A smoked pork chop was on the board during a recent visit and I was very happy with the quality of the pork chop and the medium smoked flavor. It was accompanied by home fried potatoes and two fried eggs..
John O’Groats buttermilk biscuits are among the best in LA. They are freshly baked, served hot, crunchy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. Bacon-Cheddar, Cheddar-Scallion, Chocolate Chip and even gluten-free biscuits are options. Housemade apricot and raspberry preserves nicely compliment the biscuits.
I seldom order corned beef hash because I’m usually disappointed in the offering. Many places served corned beef that lacks flavor and is salty. Conversely, the corned beef arrived in chunks and imparted great flavor. This was so good, I could see myself driving 20 miles just to enjoy this dish. They also serve a vegetarian hash made with fresh spinach, corn and seasonal vegetables.
Bacon lovers enjoy the quality of bacon that is served here. It is extremely thick, lean and cooked so that it is crispy from end-to-end. Some of John O’Groats’ customers come here just because the bacon is so good. My friend ordered it with his scrambled eggs.
The Krasny is a breakfast sandwich made with their famous bacon, scrambled eggs, and cheese on a toasted brioche bun. I appreciated that they used a quality bun and that the toasted bun gave it some additional texture and taste.
The menu is extensive and what I didn’t explore is their healthy offerings. John O’Groats had a light’n healthy menu featuring oatmeal, fresh fruit, granola and egg whites. Their menu even states that they can accommodate most food allergies.
If you are seeking a breakfast that will satisfy your needs, consider John O’Groats. They have opened their doors daily since 1982.
