The Rolling Hills Plaza in Torrance is best known for its many Japanese eateries, such as Nijiya Market, Iccho, Ichimi-An, and Yamaya. Sushi Boy recently closed and reopened in a new location in the mall as Kozo Sushi.
Kozo Sushi took over the retail space where Sub Society resided. It is a fast-casual restaurant with an extensive menu featuring nigiri, rolls, udon, tempura, bento, donburi, and curry. They also feature sushi party trays suitable for large gatherings.
The menu closely mirrors Torrance Sushi Boy’s menu, even with their lead sushi roll, the Torrance Roll made with shrimp tempura, cucumber, salmon, spicy mayonnaise, and sweet and hot sauce.
The Karaage Chicken was excellent; the exterior was crisp and nicely seasoned. On the other hand, the gyoza lacked the nice brown color from pan-frying. I also thought that they were a bit on the dry side.
The Aoi is 15 piece combination priced at $14.25 and features Tuna, Shrimp, Salmon, Eel, tekka maki, kappa maki, and others. It closely resembles Sushi Boy’s Kobe sushi set. My daughter was quite happy with the Torrance Roll.
Kozo Sushi is sushi priced for everyday dining. Don’t expect to chat with the sushi chef over what looks good that day. It is a good option for takeout sushi.
I hope they are successful in that location. Kozo Sushi needs to up their game by claiming the Yelp page and setting up a website with their hours of operation.
