Sushi is trendy in the South Bay. While some of the best quality sushi restaurants reside inland, a few South Bay restaurants warrant the attention of sushi lovers. One, in particular, is Kurisaki, a sushi restaurant located in Redondo Beach.
Kurisaki is owned and operated by Chef Haruo Kurisaki, a chef who spent 19 years at the famed Matsuhisa Restaurant in Beverly Hills before opening his restaurant in Redondo Beach. I visited the restaurant shortly after it opened, and I recently made a return visit.
Most of my friends don’t enjoy nigiri sushi because they are opposed to raw fish. My daughter is beginning to come around to eating spicy tuna rolls. She agreed to accompany me and see what I thought good sushi was all about. I hope that she will eventually become my sushi buddy.
During my first visit, I selected omakase and commented about the wide variety of fish he has available. Chef Kurisaki explained that many of his customers are from Japan and expect a wide variety of fish. That evening I enjoyed Goldeneye Snapper and Sea Bream from two different oceans.
The Fukuju Blue Label Junmai Ginjo sake was ideal for enjoying with sushi. It is a balanced medium-dry sake making this a food-friendly beverage.
All in all, I probably received equivalent food to Matsuhisa at a fraction of the price. While this is more than I usually spend for sushi, the quality and the experience were worth it. If you like quality nigiri, I recommend that you try this place.
