When many people think of Mexican food, they automatically think of tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. Mexican cuisine varies greatly, but one type of Mexican food I enjoy is breakfast. Chile Rellenos, Chilaquiles, and Huevos Rancheros are just some of the items you can expect to see. I recently visited La Carreta to try their famous Huevos Divorciados.
La Carreta is located in Boyle Heights. It began as a family restaurant in 1955 and two owners later, it remains as one today. It is located on Cesar Chavez Blvd just off the 710 freeway. Street parking is difficult due to the other businesses nearby and I parked a block away in a residential area.
There was a line of people waiting to order at La Azteca, but I made the trip so that I could enjoy breakfast at La Carreta instead. The doors to La Carreta were propped open and people were dining inside. Tables were socially distanced and the staff wore masks. It was interesting to see books for sale and a rack had serapes with NFL designs also for sale.
Their menu features a number of burritos. Because I’m partial to machaca, I selected the Machaca Burrito ($7). It is made with dried shredded beef that is rehydrated, beans, and rice.
Chilaquiles ($10) is made with their housemade corn tortillas, sliced into strips, and prepared with salsa ranchera. I plus upped mine with carne asada ($2) and fried eggs ($2). The chips maintained their crispiness throughout the meal and the carne asada was lean and had a tasty marinade.
Huevos Divorciados ($12) is their signature dish. It is best described as a combination plate of chile verde and chile colorado, separated with chilaquiles, and refried beans. The chile verde and the chile colorado sauces are both full of flavor and I enjoyed mixing each with a bit of chilaquiles. The horchata was ice cold and contained a fair amount of cinnamon. .
La Carreta strives to feature the best Mexican breakfast in East LA and I think they succeed in their endeavor. The Huevos Divorciados is a unique combination of chile verde and chile colorado. Both the chile verde and the childe colorado are excellent and can stand on their own. The two sauces are adequately “divorced” from each other separated by the chilaquiles.
La Carreta is also known for its barbacoa, tacos doracos. nopales con huevos, and chile rellenos. I look forward to my return.
