The Riviera Village Farmers Market used to operate on Friday afternoons in Redondo Beach at the intersection of Avenue I and Catalina Ave. They moved to the Triangle Parking Lot across from Trader Joe’s in Riviera Village.
Operating in the Triangle Parking Lot has alleviated the previously poor parking situation. It also avoids the need to close down one of the main entrances to Riviera Village. While you are there, you can also walk across the street to Trader Joe’s.
There are a number of reasons why I like farmers markets. Mostly, I like the taste of fresh vegetables and fruit. Because they arrive directly from a farm, they are often picked within 24 hours and you can taste the difference that makes. Another reason is that I want food to continue to be grown within driving distance of my house. That reduces our dependency for fruits and vegetables to be imported from other countries.
There are about 8 produce vendors (many organic) that sell fruits and vegetables that are grown in farms from Temecula to the south and Reedley to the north. I like the fact that one of the fruit vendors has cut fruit available to taste. Eating a piece of fruit that I like has often made the decision easy for me. In fact, I tend to buy more of that fruit knowing that I already like it.
The salsa vendor makes effective use of his salsa supply. He has a large quantity of mild salsa prepared. He also premixes his chile (chopped serrano & habaneros). The heat you select determines how many spoonfuls he adds of his chile mixture. I tasted some and purchased one with medium heat and a bag of tortilla chips made with coconut oil. He also makes fresh guacamole.
Dolce Monachelli’s had a stand that featured gourmet mini bundt cakes. I sampled the rum cake and went “wow”. I ended up purchasing three for $11 (rum, whiskey chocolate and chocolate decadence).
There is a family operating side by side as two businesses. One sells empanadas and the other sells tamales. I arrived too early for the tamales (only frozen were available) and purchased two empanadas (beef & caprese) instead.
Other offerings include a fresh seafood vendor, a coffee vendor that brews local roasts, a person selling organic honey, a crepe vendor and the St. Moritz bakery.
In addition to the vendors offering produce and prepared food, there are a number of handcrafted items available for purchase such as jewelry and handmade candles. There is also a nursery with some small to medium size potted plants.
Plenty of metered parking is available.
