Roman Aroma was a fairly recent discovery of mine. It has become my “go to” Italian bakery for pastries and cannolis. The latter have been a bit hit with my friends and family. I recently learned that they are serving wine and offer wine tastings each week.
To kick off the new offering, they recently held a special wine tasting where they offered Italian hors d’oeuvres and seven different Italian wines. The price for the event was $30 per person and I happened to find out about it via an email sent from Roman Aroma.
Winemaker, Marco Cavalier. of Le Corti dei Farfensi, was on hand to talk about his wines and answer questions. Sommelier Gessica Guidi from Guidi Winery performed most of the pouring. She was very friendly and quick to recognize that many of us weren’t familiar with Italian varietals. As a result, she rattled off tasting notes as she poured the wine.
My wife and I began with a couple of white wines which were fine. I began to get interested as the reds were poured. The first was the Le Corti dei Farfensi S. Joseph Piceno Superiore Rosso 2013. This was a nice full bodied Italian red wine that paired nicely with our appetizers.
As Guidi poured the Le Corti dei Farfensi Abate Pietro Marche Rosso 2012, she commented that it was really special and she wanted to know what I thought. After tasting it, I thought that this was the best wine so far; it was smooth, full bodied and fruit forward.
Appetizers were also served. These included thinly sliced prosciutto, salami, finger sandwiches and Italian bread twists. We found that the appetizers paired nicely with the wines served. Most of the people were clustered towards Guidi and my wife and I were seated towards the back. We were delighted that they had servers attending to us.
Roman Aroma now has wine tastings every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 p.m.until closing. Flights of wine are available from $15 to pair with their Italian delicacies.
This is an inexpensive way to try Italian wines and possibly discover new ways to pair food with wine. The staff is both friendly and helpful and it is a great way to end the workweek.
