An outdoor movie experience used to be taking your car to a drive-in movie theater. Everyone remained in their vehicles and watched the movie through their front windshield. Due to companies like Street Food Cinema, we can now enjoy the experience of outdoor seating in lawn chairs and eating delicious food truck fare. Last Saturday, my wife and I relived that experience watching Ferris Buehler’s Day Off on the Westdrift golf course in Manhattan Beach.
An evening hosted by Street Food Cinema is an entertainment experience. They bring together the best pop culture classic films, food trucks, and progressive new music. An energetic host greets everyone, introduces the band, and keeps the audience engaged with games that feature audience participation.
Talker is the Indie rock band that performed that evening. The name is a nod to her last name, Taucher, notorious in her family for being misspelled and mispronounced. Talker performed while attendees enjoyed the food they brought. Others visited the onsite food trucks: Flaming Hot Chicken, Pacifico Charbroiled Fish, District Burger, and Kinecta handed out free ice cream.
My wife enjoyed the Compton Cowboy, a burger prepared by District Burger. They add applewood smoked bacon, onion rings, pickles, mustard, barbecue sauce, and perfectly melted extra-aged cheddar. Pacifico Charbroiled Fish expertly seasoned the grilled shrimp skewers, and the fish tacos had fish and chips sized crispy whitefish.
The featured movie begins shortly after sunset. Despite sitting on a golf course, the experience is quite remarkable. A high-definition DLP rear-projection device displays a super large 50’ screen. Speakers and subwoofers add an almost cinema-quality experience.
Street Food Cinema’s movie schedule runs through Sep 11. Some of the upcoming movies include Men in Black, Big, Aladdin, and In The Heights. They set up at various outdoor venues across the city.
