Tokyo Doggie Style is a gourmet food truck serving Japanese fusion comfort food. Their bright yellow truck with a dog waving reminds me of “maneki-neko” or the cat figurine you frequently see in Asian owned businesses. The bright yellow color makes them immediately identifiable!
Tokyo Doggie Style is presently celebrating its 4th anniversary. For the number of food trucks I see come and go, this is quite an accomplishment.
Owner Allie Yamamoto is the face of Tokyo Doggie Style. She is the perfect person you want as the face of a business as she greets everyone with a smile and sometimes a hug! Many customers are called out by name as they walk up to the window of her truck.
Yamamoto once suggested that I try their lychee lemonade. After experiencing that, I immediately got hooked and I order it each time I visit. It is tasty, not too sweet, and extremely refreshing. Best of all, lychee has many health benefits and is considered a super fruit. Tokyo Doggie Style also has a non-dairy ice milk tea with boba and canned sodas.
Chef Keith Yokoyama is a Culinary Institute of America grad. While he is classically French trained, he prefers making Japanese comfort food using traditional Japanese ingredients and seasonings in unique ways.
One of my favorite items on their truck is their takoyaki. These are bite sized, ball shaped octopus that are fried. When it is just made, it is piping hot and crispy on the outside. The takoyaki is topped with pickled daikon Japanese radish, aonori, smoked bonito flakes, Japanese mayonnaise and sauce, giving it a sweet and tart profile.
Chef Yokoyama pairs his grilled salmon with his yuzu and ponzu sauces. The sauces are provided in separate containers and meant to be poured over the fish. When applied, the slightly acidic nature of yuzu and the soy sauce and citrus notes of ponzu really elevates the taste of the grilled salmon.
Their yakiniku beef is nicely marinated and grilled with onions and Yakiniku Japanese BBQ sauce. It is topped with kimchi and chopped cilantro, and is available as a rice bowl, Asian Philly Cheese Steak or on their Yakiniku Loaded Fries.
The bacon wrapped Hawaiian Terrier-ki Dog is combined with grilled pineapple, housemade teriyaki sauce, wasabi mayo, aonori seasoning and topped with shredded dried seaweed. It is served on a toasted split hot dog bun. The all beef hot dog snapped as I bit into the juicy inside.
Ordering an Asian Philly Cheese Steak seemed like an oxymoron, but I selected that anyway. Biting into the sandwich, I was first delighted that the French bread was fresh. The grilled beef with melted mozzarella, Yuzu citrus marinated coleslaw, cilantro, kimchi and spicy mayo made for a remarkable sandwich.
Their larger offerings such as rice bowls are paired with either seaweed salad, aonori fries or 3 pieces of takoyaki. I can verify that all three of these items are quite tasty. Aonori is simply chopped dried seaweed. Yokoyama adds his original umami seasoning which really makes the fries addictive in nature. Takoyaki fans will appreciate having this as one of their sides.
Health conscious people will appreciate that they have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free items on their menu. An example of this is their homie, which is a made-from-scratch vegetarian dog. They also have a vegan dog in the same manner.
Tokyo Doggie Style primarily serves in the greater LA area. On occasion, they will visit the San Fernando Valley, Oxnard and Orange County areas. Tokyo Doggie Style is one of my favorite food trucks and I highly recommend them for their delicious food and their friendly service.
